Beth Givens is founder and executive director of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, established 25 years ago in 1992. The PRC is a nationwide nonprofit consumer information and advocacy organization located in San Diego, CA. The organization invites consumers’ complaints and questions about privacy. Its website provides more than 50 consumer guides on a wide range of informational privacy issues (www.privacyrights.org).
Givens and the PRC represent consumers’ interests in public policy proceedings at the state and federal levels. Givens co-authored a chapter on identity theft with Mari Frank in Protection, Security and Safeguards (2nd ed., 2013).
Prior to her work as a consumer advocate, she was a librarian specializing in network development and resource sharing. Givens has a master’s degree from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication, and a master’s degree in Library and Information Services from the University of Denver. She is a member of the IAPP, the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
